BET ON THE NFL SUPER BOWL: SUPER BOWL FAVORITES

2024 Super Bowl Bets Explained

As it usually happens, we expect the 2024 Super Bowl to register a record betting activity. According to a report from the American Gaming Association, the 2023 Super Bowl totalled $16 billion in wagers, doubling the amount that had been recorded for the 2022 Super Bowl, which was $7.6 billion.

Therefore, Super Bowl 58 is set to be the event of the year for football fans worldwide, with the increase in betting activity adding to this enthusiasm. Before joining the action, however, it is important that you understand the different types of bets involved, and how to read and interpret the odds adequately so that you can make informed betting decisions.

Early Super Bowl 58 Line

If you are eager to secure your place in the action surrounding Super Bowl 58, several sportsbooks allow you to place bets in advance, even now.

These bets in advance are also called early lines, and they ebb and flow depending on the news and developments surrounding each team, like trades, draft selections, and injuries.

Hence, if you are planning on betting on an early line, it is recommended that you follow closely what is going on around the teams you are considering wagering on. This will help you have a better idea of the real probabilities that each team has, and to determine whether there is value in the bet or not.

Remember, a value bet is one where your estimated possibilities of an outcome are higher than the sportsbook’s implied probability.

Popular Super Bowl Bet Types

MONEYLINE

The moneyline pick is simply a selection which team will win the game outright. When betting a significant favorite – like a team that is supposed to win by more than 3 points – the bettor may risk $100 to earn $75. The bettor will get his original wager back plus $75.

If the bet is on the underdog, the same $100 bet may return $150, $200 or more. While the payoff can be huge, the underdog must win the game to get paid.

SPREAD

Betting on the point spread is the most popular Super Bowl bet. The spread is a point margin or handicap that is given to a team in order to make the odds more even.

Let’s say the Green Bay Packers are playing the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Green Bay has a -3.5 spread. This means that the Packers are considered the “favorite” team by the sportsbook.

If you wagered on the Packers, for your bet to be a winner, they need to win by at least 4 points. On the other hand, if you decided to bet on the Steelers, taking advantage of the +3.5 spread, your bet could be a winner evenPittsburgh loses the game, as long as they don’t lose by more than 3 points.

OVER/UNDER

The over/under is a wager on the total number of points that will be scored in a game.

The “over” is an exciting wager for football fans, because it means that instead of waiting until the end of Super Bowl 58 to see if your bet was a winning one, the outcome can be decided long before the match ends if the two teams combine to score more points than the over/under line.

Also, more points usually leads to a more exciting game, at least for the average fan.

Of course, some teams are more known for their strategic and tough defense rather than their attack, so in those games, you might want to consider betting on the “under.” The line for the over/under bets reflects the team’s usual scoring capabilities.

Here’s an example:

The San Francisco 49ers are facing the Miami Dolphins, and the total is at 53.5 points. If you bet on the “over,” then, for your bet to be a winner, both teams combined need to score more at least 54 points. If they score only 53 points or less, then, those who wagered on the “under” would be the winners.

It is important to mention that, to provide bettors with a wider array of opportunities, most sportsbooks also offer the chance to bet on alternate over/under lines. The odds for those over/under lines would be adjusted based on the probability that the sportsbook gives to any of the events.

Based on the previous example:

If you consider the 53.5 points line to be too high, you can choose to bet on a lower line, like 49 points. Because this has a higher probability of occurring, the odds for the “over” would be lowered, while the odds for the “under” would be boosted, and it would look like this:

  • Over 49 points, -170
  • Under 49 points, +127

The same could work the other way around. If you consider the 53.5 points line to be too low, or would like to hedge your bets with the under, you can choose to bet on a higher line, like 55 points. The odds would, again, be adjusted:

  • Over 55 points, +140
  • Under 55 points, -183

In conclusion, the over/under line can be a good option if you are not sure about which way the game will go, but are more certain about whether the game will be one with a low or high number of points.

SUPER BOWL TEASERS

The alternate lines explained above also can apply to spread bets. And when two or more of these alternate lines are combined, we have what is called a teaser bet.

While the alternate lines could cover several spreads, the teasers have specific rules. In football, the teaser bet gives the bettor six points.

Here is an example:

The Kansas City Chiefs are playing against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The regular spread is +1.5 for the Kansas City Chiefs, while the over/under is set at 50.5. Both bets have individual odds of -110.

If you decide to combine both bets, you would get a teaser bet, which would pay you a combined odds of -120.

Yes, the odds would be less.

But, in return, you would get 6 points for each of your selections. That means that, if you wagered on the Chiefs and the over, your bet would look like this:

  • Kansas City Chiefs, +7.5
  • Over 44.5 points

For your teaser bet to be successful, both outcomes need to happen.

If the Chiefs win the match or lose the match for a maximum of 7 points, and additionally, if both teams combined score over 44 points, your bet will be a winner.

SUPER BOWL PROP BETS

Also known as propositions, these are picks that focus on specific outcomes within a given game. The propositions can be related to a team or a player, with the latter ones also being known as player props.

The propositions can cover a wide range of possibilities, for example:

  • Which team will score first?
  • Patrick Mahomes to reach over 255.5 yards
  • Travis Kelce to score 1.5 touchdowns
  • Raheem Mostert to rush for over 150 yards

As you can see, the propositions can be very detailed, and they are a good option for bettors who follow the teams and the players closely.

SUPER BOWL LIVE BETTING

The propositions are a good segue into another popular type of Super Bowl bet, which is live betting.

For those bettors who are following the game live, the sportsbooks constantly add new prop bets to their offering, based on how the game is playing out.

At the same time, live bettors can also wager on the moneyline, the spread, and over/under, as well as other outcomes while the game is going on.

If you are watching the game live, and your team is losing, but it is starting to improve, and you feel it could come back, you could bet on your team and enjoy better odds, as the odds are constantly adjusted to the current result, the state of play, and any incidents that happen.

The Super Bowl tends to be a game full of emotion and excitement, and some of the most remarkable games in Super Bowl history have been unexpected comebacks and surprises. Therefore, live betting, when analyzed properly, can help you join in the action and share a moment of history in the making – while earning a significant profit.

FUTURES

A futures bet consists of a wager placed ahead of an event, in this case: Which team will win Super Bowl 58?

There are additional future bets that relate directly to Super Bowl 58. For example, you can bet, in advance, on the team that you believe will win the AFC East, or that will be the NFC West Divisional Champion. You can also bet on the AFC or NFC victors.

However, it is important to know that, during the offseason, changes result, so the odds might be drastically adjusted once the season starts. If you are still certain you would like to back your team to be the next Super Bowl champion before the season starts, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Follow the NFL Draft, as your team’s odds can improve based on the new prospects that your team selects
  • Keep an eye on the trade market, free agency, and everything related to the signing of new players and also, who your team decides to let go
  • Stay up to date on injuries and other off-the-field happenings that could impact your team’s performance

Having said that, a futures bet can be an exciting way to show your support for your team and have a vested interest when you root for them throughout the season.

2024 Super Bowl Odds Explained

If Super Bowl 58 is your first foray into sports betting, or if you are new to the field, we understand that reading and understanding betting odds properly can be a daunting task. Depending on your sportsbook of choice, odds can be presented in three different ways: American, fractional, and decimal. Not knowing this can result in confusion at the time of making your wagers.

At Lines, we have created a guide to help you calculate and read the three types of sports odds, together with other important concepts. And in the paragraphs below, we explain them in more detail as they would apply to the Super Bowl.

PRIMARY ODDS

Since Super Bowl 58 is an American event, and Lines betting partners are those companies that are authorized to operate in the United States, it is very likely that the main type of odds you will encounter while wagering on Super Bowl 58 is the American format.

  • The base for American odds is $100
  • When a team is favored to win, or an outcome is heavily favored to happen, American odds will have a negative number, for example, -150
  • In this case, -150 means that you need to bet $150 to win $100. If you win the bet, you would get $250 in total ($100 in profit, plus the $150 you invested)
  • When a team is an underdog, meaning, not favored to win, or an outcome considered unlikely to happen, American odds will have a positive number, for example, +150
  • American odds of +150 means that if you bet $100, you would make $150 in profit, and recover the $100 you invested
  • This doesn’t mean you always need to bet $100 or in multiples of $100. Instead, if you bet different amounts, the same proportion of return would apply. For example, if you bet $50 with +150 odds, you would make $75 in profit, and get back your $50 if your wager is successful.
  • If you bet on the spread, then it is likely that both options will offer odds of -110, as it is considered to be an even bet.

Here is how to calculate your winnings based on a hypothetical Super Bowl 58 encounter. Let’s assume that the Buffalo Bills are playing against the San Francisco 49ers.

The American odds for the moneyline are:

  • Buffalo Bills, -130
  • San Francisco 49ers, +150

Since the Buffalo Bills have negative odds, you would use this formula to calculate your potential winnings. When using the formula, it is important that we leave the negative sign aside.

Profit Formula for Negative Odds = (100/Odds) * Wager

Profit for a $50 bet on the Buffalo Bills = (100/130) * 50 = $38.45

You would get a $38.45 profit betting $50 on the Buffalo Bills, as well as recovering the $50 you wagered, for an $88.45 total payout.

But what about a bet on the San Francisco 49ers instead?

Since the odds for the San Francisco 49ers are positive, the formula utilized to estimate the prospective earnings is different.

Profit Formula for Positive American Odds = (Odds/100) * Wager

In this case, the odds for the San Francisco 49ers are +150, therefore:

Profits for a $50 bet on the San Francisco 49ers = (150/100) * 50 = $75

You would get a $75 profit betting $50 on the San Francisco 49ers, as well as recovering the $50 you wagered, which would make your total payout $125.

Also, let’s look at a futures bet scenario using the aforementioned odds. Since a futures bet is riskier than a moneyline, it pays better odds. Therefore, even the team that the sportsbooks predict has the highest probability of winning the Super Bowl 58 trophy – in this case, the Kansas City Chiefs – would have positive odds right now. The odds would be adjusted as the season evolves.

So, if you are a lifelong Vikings fan, and you are very enthusiastic about their ability to succeed in the postseason, you could bet $100 on FanDuel at +4400.

Here’s how much you would win, assuming you locked these odds. As mentioned before, the odds are constantly changing, so take this as an example.

Profits for a $100 Futures Bet on Minnesota Vikings to win Super Bowl 58

= (4400/100) * 100 = $4,400

This means that, if you lock in a $100 futures bet on the Minnesota Vikings at +4400 odds, and head coach Kevin O’Connell succeeds in bringing the Vince Lombardi trophy to the Twin Cities for the first time, you would make a $4,400 profit. This, plus the recovery of the $100 you wagered means your total payout would be $4,500.

DECIMAL ODDS

There is a possibility that your sportsbook of choice might also show the odds in a decimal format.

Compared to American odds, decimal odds are a lot easier to comprehend. Here are some important points:

  • The base for a decimal odds bet is $1
  • Decimal odds help us calculate the total payout. If the odds are 10.00, it means that a $1 bet would generate a payout of $10.
  • In decimal odds, the payout already includes the recovery of your wager.
  • Therefore, in this case, your profit would be the payout minus your wager.
  • Formula for Total Payout = Wager * Decimal Odds
  • Formula for Total Profit = Total Payout - Wager

Let’s assume that we are reviving one of the most exciting Super Bowl matchups of all time, and the Atlanta Falcons will seek revenge against the New England Patriots.

The odds on the moneyline are:

  • New England Patriots, 1.71
  • Atlanta Falcons, 2.25

To estimate your payouts, this is what you would do:

  • If you bet $100 on the New England Patriots = $100*1.71 = $171 total payout
  • Profit for a $100 bet on the New England Patriots = 171 - 100 = $71 profit
  • If you bet $100 on the Atlanta Falcons = $100*2.25 = $225 total payout
  • Profit for a $100 bet on the Atlanta Falcons = $225 - 100 = $125 profit

FRACTIONAL ODDS

Although less popular in the United States, the fractional odds are still widely used, especially by UK-based sportsbooks.

Fractional odds can be initially confusing, but once understood, they are simple.

Basically, what you need to do is to multiply your bet times the fraction, and the result will be the profit that you make from your wager. Then, to the result, you add the amount of money you wagered, and you now have your estimated total payout.

Here’s a practical case.

The Cincinnati Bengals are playing Super Bowl 58 against the Green Bay Packers, and are favored by the sportsbooks.

The odds are:

  • Cincinnati Bengals, 8/11
  • Green Bay Packers, 5/4

To calculate the profit on a $50 bet on the Cincinnati Bengals, you would need to multiply $50 * (8/11), which gives us a profit of $36.36. Considering the $50 we initially bet, this wager would have a payout of $83.36.

If we bet on the underdog, in this case, the Green Bay Packers, we would multiply $50 * (5/4), which would give us a profit of $62.5. After we receive our $50 back, we get a total payout of $112.5.

Betting Strategies and Recommendations

There is always an inherent risk to sports betting, and the same applies to Super Bowl 58. But while no strategy can guarantee success, there are strategies that you can use to optimize your betting results and maximize your probability of winning. Here are some.

Value Betting

As you become more familiar with sports betting odds, you will learn about a concept that is called implied probability, which we have covered at Lines.

In a nutshell, implied probability is the likelihood that an event will happen according to the sportsbook’s analysis. Depending on whether the bet has negative or positive odds, there are formulas that you can use to calculate implied probability, as follows:

Implied Probability for Negative Odds = Odds/(Odds + 100)*100

Implied Probability for Positive Odds = 100/(Odds+100)*100

Therefore, if a sportsbook assigns a 30.3% implied probability, and according to your analysis, the event has a 51% probability of happening, you are looking at a value betting opportunity.

Line Shopping

As you can see in the table highlighting the futures bet odds for Super Bowl 58, there are some differences in the odds provided by DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM.

Therefore, it is important to shop around and compare the odds at different sites, as this can likely increase your profits. This is why here at Lines we give you the opportunity to compare different odds, and why we are partnered with multiple sportsbooks, as this ensures you are supported in finding the best odds available in the market.

Tactics and Strategies

Something that can enhance your performance as a bettor is understanding the tactics and strategies that each team utilizes on the field.

For example, the Philadelphia Eagles might have a terrific offensive line, and you can typically count on them to score both through passing and rushing. But their strategy might change if they are facing a powerful defensive line, like the Los Angeles Rams.

How both teams line up and the strategy they choose to adopt has an impact on the game’s outcome, and as a bettor, it is important that you are aware of those details.

As a bonus, study the team vs. team matchups. This can help you see trends teams have when facing a particular rival, and give you a critical advantage when it comes to value betting.

Off-The-Field Developments

Several off-the-field factors can have an influence on the players’ performances, and therefore, need to be accounted for when attempting to forecast the result for Super Bowl 58.

Some of these factors are injuries, disciplinary sanctions, and internal conflicts between players and management, among others. The more informed that you can be, the better.

Line Movement

Super Bowl odds can change leading up to the game, so it’s important to monitor the odds movements across different sportsbooks. If you see the odds for a team you like start to move in their favor, you may want to place your bet earlier rather than later.

Set a Budget and Bet Responsibly

While betting on the Super Bowl is exciting, it is important to set a budget and stick to it. Don’t let emotions or excitement cloud your judgment, and never bet more than you can afford to lose. At Lines, we are committed to responsible gambling. If you or someone you love shows signs of a gambling addiction problem, consult this guide or call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Best Bets in the History of the Super Bowl

There have been many unforgettable Super Bowl wagers over the years, some of which have paid off big returns for those who were daring enough to take a chance. Here are some of the most-remembered bets in Super Bowl history:

  1. Super Bowl III (1969) - Joe Namath’s “Guarantee”: “We’re gonna win the game, I guarantee it,” Namath said when challenged by fans, prior to the Jets game against the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts. Namath’s New York Jets went on to win the game 16-7, and Namanth’s guarantee became one of the most iconic moments in the history of the Super Bowl.
  2. Super Bowl XLVIII (2014) - First Play Prop Bet - Safety: Talking about prop bets, there is a bet which allows you to wager on the outcome of the first play of the game. For Super Bowl XLVIII, the odds for the first play of the game being a safety were considerable, going as high as 50-1. Defying all odds, the Seattle Seahawks scored a safety on the first play of the game against Peyton Manning’s offensive line, resulting in an enormous payout for some bettors.
  3. Super Bowl LI (2017) - Against all odds: Remember Tom Brady’s greatest comeback? It is 2017, and the New England Patriots are trailing the Atlanta Falcons, 28-3. If you, at that point in time, happened to believe that Brady, as the greatest quarterback of all time, would lead the greatest comeback in the history of all Super Bowls, and bet on that belief, your bet could have paid you up to +2500.
  4. Super Bowl LII (2018) - Who will be the MVP? - In 2018, Nick Foles made history by being the first player to both pass for a touchdown and make a touchdown catch in the same Super Bowl, and this earned him the MVP award. Foles, who was replacing an injured Carson Wentz, was not a sportsbook favorite, and his feat gave those who backed him as the MVP a sizable return on their bet.
  5. Super Bowl LVII (2023) - Predicting the Gatorade Shower Color: A popular wager that highlights the marketing power of the Super Bowl is the prop bet that predicts the color of the Gatorade shower at the end of the game. For the 2023 Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, the color was purple. A bet on purple had odds between +750 and +900.

Favorites to win the Super Bowl

Many analysts expect Pat Mahomes to keep his winning streak and win his second Super Bowl trophy in a row. Other commentators believe Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia have a chance to revert this year’s frustrations. Moreover, there are others who believe that Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills will finally have their moment and earn the City of Light’s title drought.

Similarly, players like Mahomes, Allen, and Hurts are prospective picks for the Super Bowl MVP bet.

Most Super Bowl Wins

When it comes to predicting the favorite teams for the Super Bowl, some squads can never be discarded.

Here are the teams that, throughout history, have won the most Super Bowls, and that, because of this, will always be considered contenders, even if they are not having their best season.

Loading DraftKings Sportsbook Banner...

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Total Super Bowl Wins: 6 (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, LIII)

The New England Patriots are one of the two most successful teams in Super Bowl history, largely due to Tom Brady, who is widely regarded as one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Brady led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, including back-to-back trophies in 2004 and 2005, establishing a dynasty that will always be remembered by football fans.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Total Super Bowl Wins: 6 (IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII)

Known for their fierce defensive line that was aptly nicknamed the “Steel Curtain”, and led by iconic quarterback Terry Bradshaw, the Pittsburgh Steelers dominated the NFL scene for a considerable part of the 1970s. In a six-year span, Pittsburgh conquered the title four times – adding to a total of six titles that have them tied with the Patriots as the most successful franchise in NFL history.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Total Super Bowl Wins: 5 (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, XXIX)

Players like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Steve Young have made the San Francisco 49ers one of the most popular and triumphant teams in the National Football League. The 49ers have won a total of five championships, including back-to-back titles in 1988 and 1989, and they are eager to return to their winning ways.

DALLAS COWBOYS

Total Super Bowl Wins: 5 (VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, XXX)

Led by legendary football stars like quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, together with running back Emmitt Smith, the Dallas Cowboys have led the NFL at different periods of time, especially the 1970s and the 1990s. This journey has made the Cowboys one of the most followed teams worldwide, and one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Total Super Bowl Wins: 4 (I, II, XXXI, XLV)

Before the championship game was known as the Super Bowl, there was a team that dominated football in America. It was the Green Bay Packers, and they were coached by Vince Lombardi, a legend of the game after whom the Super Bowl trophy was named. Led by Lombardi and quarterback Bart Starr, the Packers won the first two Super Bowls ever, and since then, they have always been a team to watch.

NEW YORK GIANTS

Total Super Bowl Wins: 4 (XXI, XXV, XLII, XLVI)

The Giants have won four Super Bowl titles, and have become one of the most valuable franchises in the league. Throughout the years, players who have worn the Giants’ jersey are Lawrence Taylor, Frank Gifford, Ottis Anderson, Phil Simms, and of course, Eli Manning, who pulled off one of the greatest plays in the history of the Super Bowl, leading the Giants to achieve the improbable feat of defeating Tom Brady’s Patriots.

Best Super Bowl Games

  1. Super Bowl XIII, 1979, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Dallas Cowboys. An intense battle between the two dominant teams of the decade with two of the greatest lineups in the history of the NFL, the Cowboys vs. Steelers match featured several lead changes and a back-and-forth, exhilarating pace. Ultimately, the Steelers would win, 35-31, in what is remembered as one of the most exciting matches in Super Bowl history.
  2. Super Bowl XXXIV, 2000, St. Louis Rams vs Tennessee Titans. Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk completed their seemingly-impossible task, as they led the underdog St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl crown against Tennessee. They almost lost this, though, as Titans’ wide receiver Kevin Dyson caught a pass and headed towards the end zone, only to be tackled just before scoring, in a play that is now known as “The Tackle” or “One Yard Short” and that is remembered as one of the best plays ever in The Big Game.
  3. Super Bowl XLII, 2008, New York Giants vs New England Patriots. Led by Eli Manning, who had a total of 255 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, the New York Giants accomplished an upset of the favored New England Patriots. In that game, Manning made an epic play, challenging the pressure of New England’s defenders and eventually finding David Tyree, a play that had a decisive impact on the game’s outcome.
  4. Super Bowl XLIX, 2015, New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks. A very tight game until the very end, the Seahawks-Patriots could have ended differently, had it not been for Seattle’s decision to pass the ball on the one-yard line instead of running. Seattle had an outstanding ball carrier in Marshawn Lynch, yet, the team decided to pass, and the ball was intercepted by Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, securing another Super Bowl for New England.
  5. Super Bowl LI, 2017, New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons. Many pundits were preaching that Brady’s dynasty had come to an end as the Patriots were trailing the Falcons in the third quarter, 28-3. But how do you become the greatest quarterback of all time? By leading the greatest comeback in the history of the NFL, and reminding us that nothing is impossible, which is why we love this game. The Patriots won this game 34-28 in overtime.

Super Bowl MVPs: Two Players to Watch

Tom Brady is the player who has won the Super Bowl MVP award the most. With a total of five Super Bowl MVP awards, Brady was always a player to watch, until the very end of his journey with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

BROCK PURDY

Purdy was the last player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, and it seemed quite likely that he would end up as a member of San Francisco’s practice squad. However, he made the roster with a strong training camp showing, and when he was given an opportunity to play, he showed he belonged in the lineup. After an excellent rookie season, he has had an MVP-caliber year in the 2023 season with the powerful 49ers.

PATRICK MAHOMES

The reigning Super Bowl champion and MVP, Mahomes earned his second Vince Lombardi trophy by leading an extraordinary comeback for the Kansas City Chiefs, who defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. Mahomes passed for 182 yards, three touchdowns, and completed 21 out of 27 passes, cementing his position as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
