R.J. Barrett was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 14, 2000. The son of a former professional basketball player, Rowan Sr., and a nationally ranked college sprinter and long jumper, Kesha Duhaney, Barrett elected to play high school at Montverde Academy in Florida. Barrett was considered one of the top players in high school and won every major award, including a national championship (the first to do so since LeBron James).

Barrett elected to reclassify in high school so that he could enter college a year early. After just one season at Duke, Barrett was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 2019 NBA Draft with the third overall pick. At just 20 years old, Barrett is one of the biggest pieces for the rebuilding New York Knicks. Barrett is a well-rounded player that can both score and play multiple positions on the floor.

RJ Barrett High School Career (Montverde Academy)

R.J. Barrett elected to transfer to Montverde Academy in Florida for his high school basketball career. As a freshman, Barret led the team in scoring and was named to the MaxPreps Freshman All-American First Team. During his sophomore season, he was named the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the year.

Barrett reclassified to the class of 2018 during the summer of 2017. He was the Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year in 2018. He led Montverde to an undefeated season and the GEICO National boy’s basketball championship.

RJ Barrett College Career (Duke Blue Devils)

Barrett committed to Duke in November of 2017. A five-star recruit, Barret was recruited by nearly every major college. Barrett recorded a triple-double on February 17, making him just the second player under Coach K tenure as head coach. Barrett was named to the ACC All-Freshman and All-ACC First Team at the end of the season.

After Duke’s elimination from the 2019 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Barrett announced that he would be forgoing his final three seasons of eligibility and would declare for the 2019 NBA Draft.

Barrett was drafted third overall by the New York Knicks in the 2019 NBA Draft. He made his NBA debut on October 23, 2019. He scored 21 points and had five rebounds along with two assists and two steals. He scored a career-high 27 points on December 17, 2019. 

Barrett finished the shortened 2019-2020 NBA season with 55 starts in 56 games. He averaged 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.
