Draymond Jamal Green is an American professional basketball player who plays power forward for the Golden State Warriors. A multiple-time NBA All-Star, Green has proven to be one of the best players of his generation and has served as a key piece to championship teams both domestically during NBA season and as a part of the United States national team.
Draymond Green played his high school basketball in Saginaw, Michigan at Saginaw High School. During his final three seasons, Green averaged a double-double, leading the team to back-to-back state championships in his final two seasons as a Trojan. USA Today ranked the team as the number four high school team in the country following his senior season, while ESPN ranked him as a top-40 recruit in the country coming out of high school.
Green elected to go to Michigan State University to play his college basketball under the legendary head coach Tom Izzo. Green stayed at Michigan State for four years, going from averaging 11 minutes per game as a freshman to 33 minutes per game as a senior. By the time Green was done at Michigan State, he was averaging a double-double in his senior season.
During his time at Michigan State, Green helped the Spartans to win the Big Ten Tournament, and make multiple appearances in the NCAA Tournament as well. He shot 68% in the tournament during the team’s run to the 2009 national championship game and recorded two triple-doubles in the 2012 tournament. Green had his No. 23 retired by Michigan State at the end of his collegiate career.
Draymond Green was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 35th overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft. Not all second-round picks pan out in the NBA, but Green certainly has, with multiple NBA championships to his name and NBA All-Star Game selections as well. Green helped the Warriors reach the playoffs right away, from his rookie season on, with his toughness giving the Warriors a dimension that they did not have when it was only Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson at the forefront.
After two years of unsuccessful playoff appearances, the Dubs won the NBA Finals to cap off the 2014-15 season. With head coach Steve Kerr in charge, Golden State beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to earn their first of what would become many titles during this era of franchise history. Green recorded a triple-double in the championship-clinching Game 6.
The following season, GSW had the best regular season in the history of the sport, going 73-9 and setting the record for wins in an 82 game campaign that was previously held by the Jordan era Chicago Bulls. Green earned his first all-star nod that season, averaging 14 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game in the historic year. However, the Warriors could not win a second straight title that season, as Green and Golden State fell to the Cavaliers in a thrilling seven-game series.
After failing to win the title in 2016, the Warriors brought in former MVP Kevin Durant as a free agent. In a Western Conference full of dangerous teams such as the Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers, Durant pushed the Warriors to an even higher level, as the team won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. Green and Durant had a contentious relationship at times but made it work to the tune of three straight Finals appearances together while the team moved to San Francisco from Oakland.
Draymond Green signed a four-year, $99 million deal with Golden State in 2019. Prior to that, he had signed a five-year deal worth $82 million in 2015. Green has seen over $66 million in career earnings so far and is scheduled to make over $100 million in NBA contract payouts over the next five seasons of his career.
He has endorsed products from Smile Direct Club and Beats by Dre among others, as companies have flocked to Green thanks to his big personality and the fact that he is a household name.
Green was born in Saginaw, Michigan to Mary Babers and Wallace Davis. He has two brothers, Torrian Harris and Braylon Green, and three sisters, LaToya Babers, Jordan Davis and Gabby Davis.
Draymond Green has a son, Draymond Jr., and is currently engaged to be married to Hazel Renee, who is an actress.
