Kyrie Irving Biography Details, Age, Net Worth, and Basketball Career

Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia. He grew up in West Orange, New Jersey. Irving played for two different high school teams in his career. Irving played one season at Duke that was mostly missed due to injury. After one season at Duke, Irving was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Irving was part of the “Big Three” in Cleveland alongside LeBron James and Kevin Love. Irving helped lead the Cavaliers to an NBA title in 2016. In 2017, Irving requested a trade in order to get out of the shadow of James. After being traded to the Boston Celtics for a number of players and picks, Irving played in Boston for two seasons. He is now a member of the Brooklyn Nets after signing during the 2019 free agency period.

Irving is famously known as believing the Earth is flat and not round. He also believes in a number of other conspiracy theories involving JFK and Bob Marley.

Despite his off the court beliefs, Irving is considered one of the best all-around players in the NBA (when he is healthy). However, injuries have limited Irving throughout much of his NBA career. Now teamed up with Kevin Durant, Irving will look to bring a title to Brooklyn.

Kyrie Irving Basketball Career

High School Career (St. Patrick High School)

Kyrie Irving started his high school basketball career playing at Montclair Kimberley Academy for two years. He led them to their first state title and was the school’s second 1,000 point scorer. Irving elected to transfer to St. Patrick High School for a bigger challenge.

He led St. Patrick High School to their third New Jersey Tournament of Champions title in four years. He played alongside Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. During his senior season, St. Patrick was banned from the state tournament for holding early practice. In his senior season, Irving averaged 24 points, five rebounds and seven assists per game.

Irving was selected to the 2010 Junior National Select Team. He was also a member of the 2010 McDonald’s All-American team and the 2010 Jordan Brand Classic. Irving was part of the gold medal winning USA Under-18 team at the FIBA Championships.

College Career (Duke)

Irving committed to Duke on October 22, 2009, on a television broadcast on ESPNU. Irving played eight games during his freshman season before injuring a ligament in his right big toe. He averaged 17.4 points, 5.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game up to that point.

Irving returned from injury the day before the start of the NCAA Tournament. Duke advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to Arizona in a game where Irving scored 28 points. That would be his last game at Duke as he declared for the NBA Draft following the completion of his freshman season.

NBA Career

Irving was selected first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft. Irving was named the NBA Rookie of the Year, receiving 117 of the 120 first-place votes. During his second NBA season, Irving was selected to his first All-Star Game. In his third season, Irving was once again selected to the All-Star Game, this time, winning the All-Star Game MVP.

During the 2014-15 NBA season, Irving signed a five-year, $90 million extension with the Cavaliers. The team began the “Big Three” dynasty with Irving, Kevin Love and LeBron James. The Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals to take on the Golden State Warriors. However, Irving was injured in Game 1 of the Finals and the Warriors went on to win the series as Irving was ruled out for the remainder of the Finals.

Irving missed a couple of months of the start of the 2015 NBA season. He returned in December. The Cavaliers once again made the NBA Finals. They trailed the Warriors 3-1 in the series but managed to win three-straight games and win the NBA Finals. They were the first team to trail 3-1 and come back to win the series.

In July of 2017, Irving requested a trade. He was traded to the Boston Celtics for a number of players and draft picks. Another major injury kept him out of the playoffs for the Celtics during the 2017-2018 season.

After the 2019 season, Irving signed with the Brooklyn Nets during free agency. In February of 2020, it was announced Irving would miss the remainder of the season due to another injury.
