Paul Jamain Washington Jr., or as the Kentucky Wildcats faithful like to call him, P.J., was born on August 23, 1998.  Washington is currently a professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. The Kentucky-born rising star was destined to be a basketball player, as not only was he born in the Bluegrass state, but his parents were ballplayers as well. Both of P.J.’s parents, Sherry and Paul Washington Sr., played Division I basketball at Middle Tennessee State. P.J. is accompanied in his athletic household by his two brothers Tyler and Spencer, as well as one sister Alexandria. They grew up in Dallas, Texas.

P.J. Washington played for two high schools, Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada, and Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas. After traveling the country for high school, P.J. ended up back where it all began: Kentucky. He was born in Louisville, but the McDonald’s All-American decided to forego the Cardinals and don the blue and white for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He played two seasons for the Wildcats before entering the 2019 NBA Draft. Washington was selected 12th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2019 NBA Draft.

High School Career (Findlay Prep/Prime Prep Academy)

P.J. Washington went on to play for two different high schools. First, he attended Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas near his hometown. With a quick change of heart, P.J. traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to play for Findlay Prep. As a senior at Findlay Prep, Washington averaged 19.6 points, 6.1 assists, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. This was enough to earn P.J. an invite to the McDonald’s All-American Game and rank him as the No. 12 overall recruit in the class.

College Career (Kentucky Wildcats)

The 5-star recruit had some big-name schools on his radar. Washington's decision ultimately came between Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina State, North Carolina, Texas, UCLA, and UNLV. On November 10, 2016, Washington committed to the Kentucky Wildcats and signed his National Letter of Intent on November 20. P.J. had a solid first season with the Wildcats, averaging 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a freshman. Washington showed massive improvement towards the end of the season, leaving Big Blue Nation hopeful that he would return. In what could have been his last game for the Cats, Washington tallied 18 points and 15 rebounds in an NCAA Tournament loss to Kansas State. 

After teetering on leaving Kentucky for the NBA, P.J. decided to come back for one more year. In his sophomore year, Washington showed more improvement. He averaged 15.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. He was also the clear leader of the team, always having the ball in his hands when the game was on the line. After a devastating loss to the Auburn Tigers in the Elite 8 of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, P.J. Washington declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.

P.J. Washington was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets 12th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft on July 3, 2019. The blooming star officially inked his name with the Hornets on July 3, 2019. His NBA debut instantly got his name in bright lights, as he boasted an impressive day versus the Chicago Bulls. On October 23, 2019, P.J. poured in 27 points and added 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block in a win over the Bulls. Not to mention, he set an NBA debut record with 7 made three-pointers. Following an impressive NBA debut, P.J. has continued to show promise. He added another huge night on November 29, 2019, when he tallied 26 points and 5 rebounds against the Detroit Pistons. In his rookie campaign thus far, P.J. Washington is averaging 12.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.8 blocks.
