Patrick Beverley is an experienced, well-rounded veteran NBA player whose toughness, defense, and shooting has made him an important part of several very successful teams. Currently with the Los Angeles Clippers, the point guard was drafted first by the Lakers but played in Europe without ever being called to the Lakers’ NBA roster. His first NBA contract came with the Houston Rockets, where he quickly earned a starting spot and contributed greatly to the rise of the Rockets teams built around James Harden.
Traded to the Clippers as part of the Chris Paul trade, Beverley again made himself an essential part of the team. The team outperformed expectations for several seasons, and Beverley was an important role player of the 2019-2020 team that looked like a genuine contender prior to the season’s suspension.
Beverley transferred from Waubonsie Valley High School to John Marshall Metropolitan High School after his freshman year.
He excelled at the Chicago school, averaging 37.3 points per game as a senior. He played in a national high school All-Star game that was held in Chicago.
Beverley played at the University of Arkansas for two years. He won the SEC Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.9 points per game, and earned a starting spot in his sophomore year. He led the team in rebounds, steals, and three-point percentage.
Beverley was expected to have an excellent junior year but was ineligible due to academic reasons. Instead of waiting to return to NCAA basketball, Beverley decided to play in Europe.
Between 2008 and 2012, Beverley played for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine, Olympiacos Piraeus in Greece, and Spartak St. Petersburg in Russia. He won the EuroCup MVP in 2012.
In 2009, the Lakers acquired his draft rights in the NBA draft and the next day traded them to the Miami Heat. However, neither team called him up; Beverley remained in Russia until signing a contract with the Houston Rockets in 2012.
Beverley beat out Jeremy Lin for the starting point guard spot and paired well with James Harden, recently arrived in Houston by trade. In his first two full seasons with Houston, 2013-2015, Beverley averaged over 10 points per game and provided important perimeter defense. From 2015 to 2017, his three-point percentage improved, shooting 40% in 2015-2016. In 2017 he was named to the All-Defensive First Team.
He was an important part of the Houston team but was traded when the chance came to acquire Chris Paul from the Clippers in 2017. Beverley only played 11 games in 2017-2018 due to surgery to repair damage to his knee. He was able to play 78 games in the 2018-2019 regular season, and also had two 14-rebound games in the first round against the Golden State Warriors.
Beverley’s first NBA contract was with the Houston Rockets. In 2015, he signed a four-year, $23M deal. The last two years of the contract were spent with the Los Angeles Clippers. He was expected to be a highly sought-after free agent in 2019, but chose to stay with the Clippers for 3 years, $40M.
Beverley signed a 3-year, $40M deal with the Clippers in 2019.
Beverley’s parents are Lisa Beverley and Patrick Bracy.
