Kyle Terrell Lowry is an American basketball player who plays point guard for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association. While the Raptors roster has undergone multiple changes with Lowry on the team, Lowry has been the constant, using his sharp shooting and his offensive gifts to keep the Raptors headed in the right direction no matter who is on the team alongside him.
Kyle Lowry played his high school basketball at Cardinal Dougherty in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Playing for a high school in his home city, Lowry impressed at the point guard position. He was ranked as a top-10 player at his position in terms of recruiting and was a top-30 player in the nation in his recruiting class.
Lowry opted to stay local for his college basketball career as well, choosing Villanova as his destination. He played two seasons with the Wildcats, earning Big East all-rookie team honors after his first season and being named to the second team all-Big East in his sophomore year. In his second year, he averaged 2.3 stl per game, a sign of things to come for him on the defensive end.
Villanova ended up retiring Lowry’s number years after his playing career was over. But Lowry did not stick around for his junior season, as he opted to enter into the NBA Draft after two years at Jay Wright’s program in Philly.
Lowry was taken with the 24th overall pick of the 2006 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. As a rookie, he saw limited action before a broken wrist suffered against the Cleveland Cavaliers cost him his season. The next two years saw Lowry sitting behind starting point guard Mike Conley, which prompted Lowry to seek a new team.
In the middle of the 2009 season, Lowry was traded to the Houston Rockets as a part of a three-team deal that also involved the Orlando Magic. The Rockets made the playoffs that same season, with Lowry immediately getting involved in postseason competition as a result of the trade.
After sitting behind Aaron Brooks early in his tenure with the Rockets, Lowry started to get more playing time as he spent more time in Houston. His 17 point, 18 assist double-double against the Grizzlies in 2010 was one of the most impressive double-doubles due to the sheer number of assists Lowry dished out. But Lowry’s time with the Rockets ran short after Rick Adelman was ousted as head coach.
In the 2012 offseason, Lowry was traded to the Toronto Raptors for Gary Forbes and a first round draft pick. That trade turned out to be one-sided in favor of the Raptors, seeing as teams have proven willing to give up multiple draft picks for players of Lowry’s talent level previously. Lowry has shined with the Raptors ever since, making six All-Star Game appearances as a Raptor and helping the team to win the Atlantic Division on multiple occasions over the likes of the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.
In 2019, Lowry helped the Raptors win their first NBA championship. He and the rest of the team defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals before beating the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.
For his career, Lowry has averaged 14.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 6.1 apg, and 0.3 blk per game. He has connected on 80% of his free throws attempted (FTA) for his career. He has been valuable enough to never have been an unrestricted free agent. He has also helped the United States national team, as a part of the gold medal winning 2016 Olympic team in Rio.
Kyle Lowry signed a three-year, $90 million deal with the Toronto Raptors in 2017 and has signed a one-year $30 million extension on top of it since. Lowry has signed for $180 million in NBA contract money over the course of his career, and has an estimated net worth of $55 million. Lowry’s most notable endorsement deal is with Adidas, who he joined, left and re-joined over the course of his career.
Lowry was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Lonnie Lowry and Marie Holloway. He has an older brother, Lonnie Jr., who is five years older than him. Lowry is married to Ahyana Cornish, and the couple has two sons together, Karter and Kameron.
