Early gives Washington a controllable arm for the stretch run. The Nationals have leaned on All-Star Foster Griffin and Cade Cavalli atop the rotation. Doctors found no structural damage in Early’s elbow, per reports. Early has already resumed throwing off a mound. The Nationals view Early as a top-three starter once healthy.

The trade set a quiet tone for a market full of buyers. Both clubs subtracted from a surplus to fix a need. Washington leaned on its MLB-best offense to deal for rotation help. Boston, 25th in scoring, chose a bat over bullpen depth. Each side traded youth for a cleaner path to October.

A separate blow reshaped the catcher market on Sunday. The Athletics placed All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers on the 10-day injured list. Langeliers tore the right meniscus while running the bases. The injury could end the season for Langeliers, per ESPN. The A’s recalled Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas.
