The Marlins losing streak reached a franchise-record 12 games Sunday. San Diego rallied from a three-run deficit to win 5-3 at LoanDepot Park. Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill each homered in a decisive four-run eighth inning.

Six Outs From Escape, Then The Collapse

Miami led 3-0 before the Padres rallied Sunday afternoon. Machado’s fifth-inning RBI double had already sparked the comeback. San Diego completed a three-game sweep at LoanDepot Park, following a 7-2 win on Saturday. The loss dropped Miami to 52-54 on the season, according to Yahoo Sports and ESPN.

The Marlins are now 0-9 since the All-Star break. They are the only team in baseball without a win in that span. Miami sat at 52-42 on July 9 after a six-game winning streak, part of a 25-8 run since June 1. That surge is long gone under a four-series sweep stretch that built the skid.

The 12-game skid is the longest in franchise history, per Washington Post reporting citing researcher Jordan McPherson. The Marlins had lost 11 straight three previous times before Sunday. Twice it happened in 1998 during a 108-loss season, and once more in June 2011. Sunday’s ninth defeat since the break pushed Miami past all three of those marks.

Manager Clayton McCullough did not hide from the number Sunday. “There’s no hiding from it. It’s what it is,” he said, per MLB.com. He added that his players are “prideful” and “upset, frustrated, angry” about the run. Slugger Kyle Stowers used a card-table metaphor for the same 12 losses. He said, “It just feels … like we’re playing roulette and it hits red 12 times in a row.” Stowers added the effort has not been the problem, just the results.

Miami’s stance for the Aug. 3 trade deadline just flipped. A team that could have argued to buy in early July now looks like a clear seller. The Marlins sit fourth in the NL East at 52-54. Every loss between now and Aug. 3 pushes more veterans toward the trade market.

Miami opens a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies next, still hunting its first win since the All-Star break. Front office decisions on which veterans to move are expected to sharpen before that series ends. McCullough’s message was clear about who fixes this.
