Justin Verlander is ready to say goodbye. The Detroit Tigers ace announced Wednesday he will retire after the 2026 season. Verlander, age 43, is the oldest active player in Major League Baseball.

A Hall of Fame Resume Built Over 21 Seasons

Justin Verlander made the decision official at a Wednesday news conference. Verlander will make his 10th All-Star Game appearance next week. Commissioner Rob Manfred named Verlander a Legend Pick for the 2026 game. Verlander broke in as the No. 2 pick out of Old Dominion in 2004. Verlander then won American League Rookie of the Year in 2006.

Verlander carries 266 regular-season wins, the most among active pitchers. Verlander has recorded 3,554 strikeouts, eighth on the all-time list. Verlander needs 21 more strikeouts to pass Don Sutton for seventh. Verlander owns 82.3 Baseball-Reference wins above replacement, 24th all time. Verlander won three Cy Young Awards, an MVP, and two World Series titles.

Verlander spent his first 12-plus seasons with the Detroit Tigers before a 2017 trade. The Houston Astros acquired Verlander in summer 2017 for a pennant push. Verlander anchored the Astros rotation and won the 2017 World Series. Verlander later pitched for the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Verlander returned to Detroit ahead of the 2026 season for a final chapter.

Verlander joins rare company across baseball history. Verlander and Don Newcombe are the only players to win Rookie of the Year, an MVP, and a Cy Young. Verlander ranks as one of six pitchers with three or more career no-hitters. Verlander claimed his second Cy Young in 2019, edging teammate Gerrit Cole. Verlander won a third Cy Young in 2022 after Tommy John surgery, going 18-4 at age 39. Verlander earned both of his World Series rings with the Houston Astros.

Verlander frames the 2026 season as a farewell tour, not a milestone chase. Verlander said he never wanted to retire because of a number or a date. Verlander has not pitched since March 30 because of hip and hamstring injuries. The injuries limited Verlander to a partial role in his 21st season. Detroit now builds Verlander’s send-off around one last healthy stretch.

Verlander wants to finish the 2026 season on the mound, not the bench. Verlander called the All-Star selection a moment he will cherish with family. Verlander sits 21 strikeouts short of seventh place all-time. Reaching Don Sutton would give Verlander one last number to chase. The Tigers face the Athletics on Thursday as Verlander builds back arm strength. Verlander enters the All-Star break chasing history at age 43.
