The American League owned the 2026 MLB All-Star Game from the opening pitch. American League arms blanked the National League 4-0 on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. Cody Bellinger drove in two runs and claimed MVP honors in Philadelphia.

Yankees Bats and a 15-Strikeout Wall Buried the NL

The American League struck early against Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez. The National League batted as the home team that night. Sanchez loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning. Cody Bellinger then lined a two-run single for New York. Ben Rice followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. New York provided both run-scoring hits in that opening frame. The American League never trailed after that first inning.

American League pitching then smothered the National League for nine innings. Eleven AL pitchers combined to allow only three hits. The National League struck out 15 times, an All-Star Game record. Starter Dylan Cease opened with a scoreless first inning. Parker Messick and Michael Wacha extended the early hitless stretch. AL pitchers issued no earned runs across the entire nine innings.

Miguel Vargas supplied the exclamation point in the seventh inning. Vargas launched a 433-foot homer to stretch the lead to 4-0. Bellinger and Vargas combined for three of the AL’s four runs. Juan Soto collected one of the National League’s three hits. Soto singled off Joe Ryan to open the fourth inning. That hit ended the American League’s combined no-hit bid.

The National League never solved American League pitching all night. NL hitters finished 3-for-30 at the plate. That line produced a .100 batting average for the game. The 15 strikeouts topped every previous All-Star Game total. National League bats never pushed a run across in nine innings.

Shutouts rarely surface at the Midsummer Classic these days. The American League last blanked the National League in 2013. That game also ended 3-0 in the AL’s favor. Cody Bellinger became the fourth Yankee to win All-Star Game MVP. Bellinger posted the only multi-RBI effort of the game. Bellinger joined Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Giancarlo Stanton on that list.

The exhibition no longer decides World Series home field since 2017. Still, the American League showcased pitching depth before the season resumes. Clubs return to regular play this weekend after the break. The trade deadline then looms on August 3 for all 30 teams. Contenders like New York now hunt more arms for October.
