Shedeur Sanders says his Browns quarterback battle with Deshaun Watson carries zero drama. The second-year passer told reporters both men are chasing “the best version of ourselves.” Cleveland rookies report to camp July 23. Veterans follow five days later on July 28.

Respect Rules the Browns Quarterback Room

Sanders addressed the competition Monday in comments carried by Pro Football Talk and CBS Sports. “It’s a level of respect that we all in the quarterback room have for each other,” Sanders said. He added the quarterbacks are “not really emotional” about factors outside their control. Sanders and Watson even trained together with Browns skill players in South Florida this offseason. Watson reportedly enters camp holding a narrow lead in the battle.

Sanders earned this competition with a late rookie surge. The 2025 fifth-round pick appeared in eight games and started seven. Sanders completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His Week 14 breakout brought 364 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, 29 rushing yards and a rushing score.

That Week 14 line put Sanders in rare company. Per NFL.com, only Joe Burrow and Sanders posted 350 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and a rushing score as rookies. Sanders reached that mark just 10 starts into an NFL career that began as pick No. 144. Burrow needed the No. 1 overall pedigree to do it first.

Watson brings a different resume and a different risk profile. Watson has not started an NFL game since October 2024. He tore his right Achilles that month, then tore it again during rehab within 12 weeks. Watson also sits in the final season of the five-year, $230 million guaranteed contract he signed in 2022.

The stakes stretch beyond one depth chart line. The winner starts Week 1 for a Cleveland team that drafted two quarterbacks in 2025. Sanders costs the Browns a rookie-deal salary through 2028. Watson carries the heaviest cap figure on the roster in the last year of his deal. A Sanders win would hand Cleveland its cheapest QB1 situation since 2021.

Watch the first-team reps once veterans arrive July 28. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has not named a starter for Week 1. Cleveland opens preseason play in August, and those snaps will reveal the pecking order. Sanders gets five extra days of work with fellow young Browns before Watson reports. The rep count in the first padded practices should tell fans where this battle truly stands. A 24-year-old on a rookie deal against a 30-something on a $230 million contract is a clean stakes equation.
