Ron Francis was born on March 1, 1963, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 200 pounds, Francis began his hockey career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League. His early promise was evident, and he was drafted fourth overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.
