Devonte’ Terrell Graham was born on February 22, 1995. He is currently a professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. Graham was born in Raleigh, North Carolina to his mother Dewanna King. Graham was not close with his father but was raised by a strong-willed, independent woman who is only 14 years older than him. Graham has a younger sister, Shamaria Massenburg.
Graham attend two different high schools. First, he attended Needham B, Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and then he transferred to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. At Brewster Academy, Graham had the chance to team up with NBA rising superstar, Donovan Mitchell. Devonte’ went on to attend Kansas University, where he played all four years of his eligibility. His excellent college career as a Jayhawk was not enough to get him drafted in the first round. However, Devonte’ Graham was selected with the Charlotte Hornets’ second round, 34th overall pick.
Devonte’ Graham Basketball Career
Devonte Graham first attended Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He led his squad to a 4A state championship game in 2012-13 behind his 15.7 points and 5.4 assists per game. Following his stint at his first high school, Graham transferred to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He once again carried his team to the national prep championship behind his 17.2 points and 5.0 assists per game. At Brewster Academy, he was teammates with now NBA superstar, Donovan Mitchell. After a fantastic high school career, Graham committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks.
After initially committing to Appalachian State University, Devonte’ Graham ended up committing to play for the Kansas Jayhawks. Graham played all four seasons for the Jayhawks. In his freshman year, he only averaged 5.7 points and 2.1 assists per game, but he did manage to score 20 points in the NCAA Tournament against Wichita State.
The following year, Graham dropped 27 points against Oklahoma, a conference rival. He was then named MVP of the 2016 Big 12 Tournament after he poured in 27 points in a championship victory over West Virginia. In 2017, Graham averaged 13.4 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds alongside Kansas great Frank Mason. In his senior year, Graham scored his Kansas career-high of 35 points in a win over Toledo. He matched his career-high in a win over Syracuse as well. Devonte’ was named Big 12 Player of the Year due to his 17.6 points and 7.2 assists as a senior.
Although he put together an incredible college career at Kansas, Graham was still not ranked very high on the NBA Big Board. However, the Atlanta Hawks drafted Devonte’ Graham with the 34th overall pick in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft but traded him to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for two second-round picks. Graham scored zero points and added one assist in his debut as a Charlotte Hornet in only five and a half minutes of play. His first big game came against the Chicago Bulls on October 23, 2019, where Graham scored 23 points while adding eight assists and four rebounds. This was a sign of things to come for Devonte as he went on to score a career-high 40 points on the Brooklyn Nets on December 11. Since then, Graham has proven that he has enough talent to score at the NBA level, and is continuing to improve.
