Bryn Forbes, shooting guard for the San Antonio Spurs, has risen from an unknown, undrafted player to an important part of the Spurs’ rotation. After slowly working his way through the Spurs’ system, he went on to become a starter and play in every game of the 2018-2019 NBA season. He is known as one of the best shooters in the league, and is among the most productive undrafted players in NBA history.
Forbes was a consistent scorer at J.W. Sexton High School in Lansing, MI, where he played alongside current NBA player Denzel Valentine. His senior year, he averaged 19 points per game. He was rated as a two-star recruit and committed to play college basketball at Cleveland State University.
In his first NCAA season, Forbes started in 18 of his 32 appearances for Cleveland State. He averaged 12.7 points per game with a season high of 24, primarily on the strength of his outside shooting. He was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team, won the League Newcomer of the Year Award, and was named to the Mid-Major All-American Team. His sophomore year was similarly successful, starting all 32 games and averaging 15.6 points per game.
Forbes transferred to Michigan State his junior year, in part to be closer to his son. He was afforded an opportunity for a larger role due to the turnover on the Michigan State roster. He averaged 8.5 points per game and helped the Spartans reach the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. His senior year, Forbes increased his scoring to 14.6 points per game, making over 48% of 3s, and was named to the All Big Ten Second Team.
Forbes worked out with several teams prior to the 2016 NBA Draft but went undrafted. He joined the San Antonio Spurs’ Summer League team. His rookie season was spent mostly in the G-League, with the Austin Spurs, but he did have a 27-point performance against the Dallas Mavericks.
On November 11, 2017, Forbes made his first NBA start. He averaged 6.9 points per game, shooting 39% from three. Forbes’ performances and potential earned him a new contract with the Spurs in the 2018 offseason.
In 2018-2019, Forbes’ three-point shooting was an integral part of the Spurs offense. He played in all 82 games with 81 starts, averaged 11.9 points per game, and shot 43% from three. He became only the third Spurs player to make 250 three pointers in his first three seasons with the team. He had started 62 out of 63 games, averaging 11.2 points per game in the 2019-2020 season before it was suspended due to coronavirus.
After going undrafted, Forbes signed a $1.8M deal with the Spurs. After two seasons, he signed a 2-year, $6M contract with the Spurs.
Bryn Forbes signed 2-year, $6M deal with the San Antonio Spurs in 2018.
Forbes was born to Brandon and Sue Forbes in Lansing, Michigan. He has two sons, Carter and Leo.
