Gerrit Cole Silences Rays 569 Day Return

Gerrit Cole’s MLB return came 569 days after his last pitch in a game that counted. The New York Yankees ace took the mound Friday at Yankee Stadium against the Tampa Bay Rays and delivered six shutout innings, holding Tampa Bay to two hits. The Numbers Behind Cole’s 569-Day Comeback Start

Gerrit Cole underwent elbow ligament reconstruction surgery on March 11, 2025. Cole’s last major league pitch that counted came October 30, 2024, in Game 5 of the World Series. Cole completed two spring training outings and six minor league rehabilitation starts before Friday’s game. Cole took on the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium in New York. The Rays own the best record in Major League Baseball. Cole allowed two hits and three walks across six innings while striking out two batters.

Gerrit Cole averaged 96.1 mph on his four-seam fastball, reaching a peak of 98.6 mph in the first inning. Cole threw 72 total pitches, 50 for strikes, a 69 percent strike rate. Cole started 18 of 22 batters with a pitch in the strike zone. Cole mixed 35 four-seamers, 13 sinkers, 10 sliders, eight changeups and six knuckle-curveballs. Cole retired 10 consecutive batters during one stretch in the middle innings, using his new overhead arm motion from rehabilitation.

Cole induced just five swings-and-misses among 31 total swings from Tampa Bay. The Rays make contact at one of the highest rates in the American League, making controlled contact a meaningful benchmark for Cole. Rays manager Kevin Cash said after the game, “He’s as special as there is.” Cole acknowledged room to improve. “There’s probably some opportunities to get a little further outside of the strike zone,” Cole said. “But knowing that might not be as crisp as it has been before.”

The Tampa Bay Rays scored three runs in the eighth inning off New York’s bullpen to win 4-2. Tampa Bay improved to 4-0 against the New York Yankees this season. Yankees captain Aaron Judge went 0-for-4, a 1-for-24 stretch spanning 11 consecutive games without an RBI. Eleven consecutive games without an RBI is a career high for Aaron Judge. Judge’s batting average dropped to .245 on the night.

Gerrit Cole will make his next start at Kansas City next week. Max Fried is on the injured list with a left elbow bone bruise, the rotation opening that brought Cole back. New York trails Tampa Bay 4-0 in the 2026 season series. Aaron Boone said Cole “did a lot of game management things really well” on a night when both velocity and sequencing impressed. The Yankees’ rotation depth now depends on how quickly Gerrit Cole regains full confidence in his secondary arsenal.
