The two first met in 2013, when McGregor won a decision. Holloway arrived at UFC 329 as one of the sport’s most active elite strikers. Instead of a rivalry reboot, fans got 69 seconds and an abrupt finish.

The injury extends a brutal run for McGregor. The former two-division champion had not fought since July 2021. In that bout, UFC 264, McGregor broke the left tibia against Dustin Poirier. A planned 2024 return against Michael Chandler collapsed when McGregor broke a toe. McGregor last won inside the Octagon in January 2020 against Donald Cerrone. UFC 329 was the first McGregor fight in more than five years.

The setback scrambles UFC plans at the top of the card. McGregor remains the promotion’s biggest pay-per-view draw despite three straight defeats. The contract now has one fight left, and that finale sits in limbo. Dustin Poirier, who beat McGregor twice, called the latest injury karma. UFC had marketed the McGregor rematch for months across its platforms. The UFC loses its loudest draw for a second straight comeback.

McGregor’s next move starts on the operating table, not in the cage. Surgery comes first, then months of rehabilitation before any sparring. White said talks resume only when doctors clear hardcore training. An ACL tear at 38 tests even the most durable athletes. McGregor turned 38 this month and would near 39 for a 2027 return. For now, the biggest name in MMA waits, and so does the UFC.
