Brett Kulak scored 3:52 into overtime at Ball Arena on Wednesday night. The Avalanche win in Game 5 closed the second-round series and sent Colorado to the Western Conference final. Inside the Avalanche Comeback The Minnesota Wild jumped ahead 3-0 by the second period of Game 5. Marcus Johansson scored 34 seconds into the contest. Nick Foligno added two goals to stretch the Wild lead. The Avalanche pulled goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood after one period. Scott Wedgewood replaced Mackenzie Blackwood and stopped seven shots. The Avalanche rally began with Jack Drury’s goal at the 3:33 mark of the third period. Nathan MacKinnon tied the score 3-3 with 1:23 remaining and an empty Colorado net. MacKinnon’s shot from the left side cleared past Jesper Wallstedt into the top corner. In overtime, Martin Necas circled behind the net and fed Brett Kulak in front. Kulak’s overtime winner was Kulak’s first goal since January 19 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Avalanche acquired Brett Kulak on February 24 in the Samuel Girard trade. Colorado has overcome a three-goal playoff deficit only three times in 53 tries since 1995. The Minnesota Wild had held a 21-0 record when leading playoff games by at least three goals. The Avalanche advance to the Western Conference final for the eighth time since 1995-96. Colorado will face the winner of the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks series. The Vegas Golden Knights currently lead the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in that matchup. Cale Makar grabbed Makar’s right arm after a collision with Mats Zuccarello but later returned to the ice.
