Why Wembanyama Left $50 Million On the Table

Wembanyama agreed to the 25% maximum rookie-scale extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported. The deal includes a player option in the fifth season. Wembanyama became eligible the day after the Spurs fell to the New York Knicks in five NBA Finals games. Wembanyama posted a vow on July 10: “Spurs family, I’m here to stay.”

The $252 million figure ranks as the third-largest rookie extension in NBA history. Only Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley signed bigger, at $269 million each. By declining the 30% maximum, Wembanyama left roughly $50 million unclaimed. That gap hands the Spurs real flexibility under the salary cap.

Wembanyama’s choice breaks from a recent trend of stars grabbing every dollar. Donovan Mitchell signed a record $273 million extension with the Cavaliers this month. Wembanyama instead prioritized roster flexibility over that last $50 million. All-NBA honors had unlocked the 30% tier, yet Wembanyama passed on it.

Wembanyama earned the leverage the hard way. Wembanyama won 2025-26 Defensive Player of the Year and led the league at 3.08 blocks per game. Wembanyama also made his second All-Star team, his first as a starter. Wembanyama became the sixth Spur to start an All-Star Game, joining George Gervin, David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Wembanyama posted career highs last season with 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Wembanyama became the seventh player ever to average 25 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. San Antonio’s starting five went 21-3 together and finished at plus-18.5 points per 100 possessions.

The extension ties Wembanyama to San Antonio for five seasons past his rookie deal. Wembanyama holds a player option in the final year. The deal lets the Spurs keep building around De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle. San Antonio also protected cap room that the 30% maximum would have consumed.

San Antonio reached the 2026 NBA Finals before losing to the Knicks in five games. The Spurs return their entire starting five for 2026-27. Wembanyama’s discount gives the front office room to chase one more piece. San Antonio last won the NBA title in 2014. At 22, Wembanyama has turned cap math into San Antonio’s edge.
