Philadelphia Eagles Won't Name Jalen Hurts Starting QB in 2021

Are you ready for a Jalen Hurts-Joe Flacco QB competition?

Speaking to the media Wednesday, new Eagles coach Nick Sirianni refused to name Hurts as the franchise's starting quarterback, implying there will be an open competition in training camp.

Despite what Sirianni says, Hurts is still the heavy favorite to start under center for Philadelphia or something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

As mentioned, the Eagles' current backup quarterback is Flacco. And even though he was an elite QB in his prime, those days are long gone. Considering the Eagles shipped off Carson Wentz to the Colts this offseason — along with owner Jeffrey Lurie reportedly ordering his minions to build around Hurts — this just seems like a new coach trying to build a culture of "competition."

If the Eagles didn't trade away the No. 6 pick to the Dolphins then the refusal to name Hurts might be a bigger deal.

Hurts flashed some impressive playmaking ability in his short time as Eagles' starter last season, throwing for six touchdowns and 1,061 yards and rushing for 354 yards. But he's far from a sure thing, recording a 56.2 PFF grade in four starts.
