3 NFL Teams That Should Trade for 49ers' Deebo Samuel

The NFL offseason continues to get crazier.

In the latest twist of events, All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel has requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN.

The “wide back” who dabbled at both receiver and running back this past season is on the hunt for a new contract and apparently a new team.

It’s a shocking request because of how well Samuel played under Kyle Shanahan, but, according to reports, Deebo has issues with how he’s used in the offense.

With Samuel ready to move on and the 2022 NFL Draft a little over a week away, which teams are the best landing spots for one of the most dynamic players in the league?

This one is obvious.

The Jets have been searching for a top-flight receiver to pair with rookie standout Elijah Moore. After swinging and missing for Tyreek Hill, the Jets have another chance to add a receiver who could help Zach Wilson’s development.

The Jets have strong connections to Samuel, too. Jets coach Robert Saleh is the Niners’ former defensive coordinator while offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur was an assistant with San Francisco before joining the Jets.

The Jets also have the draft capital to make the best offer. The Jets have Nos. 4, 10, 35 and 38 in the upcoming draft. Would they be willing to part ways with the 10th overall selection or would the Jets offer one or both of their second-rounders? That could be the difference between acquiring Deebo or losing him to another team, like, say, the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Jets aren’t the only team with a need at wide receiver and multiple premium selections to offer.

After dealing Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, the Chiefs’ wide receiver depth chart is bereft of talent. There’s no way Kansas City will go into the season with Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster as the top two receivers.

Equipped with multiple picks in the first three rounds, the Chiefs have the ability to offer the Niners a solid deal in exchange for their top offensive player.

The Chiefs could offer either No. 29 or No. 30 along with another mid-round pick, which would be better than the Jets’ offer unless New York surrenders the 10th overall pick.

Samuel will presumably get a downgrade at play caller and how he’s used wherever he goes … except Kansas City. Coach Andy Reid could certainly put Samuel in advantageous spots, but if he has issues with how he’s used in the 49ers’ offense, he might not want to go to Kansas City where he could be used similarly.

Still, pairing Patrick Mahomes with Deebo Samuel would be a nightmare for other AFC teams.

This one might be a little bit of a surprise.

The Texans are in the middle of a rebuild so giving up premium assets might not make a lot of sense, but Houston is reportedly open to offering the No. 13 pick in exchange for a top-tier pass-catcher, according to The Athletic.

The Texans are flush with extra picks thanks to the Deshaun Watson trade and acquiring Deebo would help the franchise evaluate second-year starter, Davis Mills.

Despite the reported dysfunction in Houston, the Texans could see the AFC South as winnable as early as next season, too. The Colts and Titans are still the two best teams in the division, but they are by no means juggernauts.

If the Texans are willing to trade the 13th overall pick then they could be the leader in the clubhouse for Samuel’s services.
