The 38-year-old assistant coach played fullback at Vanderbilt from 2002-2004 before starting his coaching career with UCLA in 2006.
Lea is currently in his third season as defensive coordinator with the Fighting Irish. He was promoted to the position after being the school's linebacker coach for one season.
Lea will take over for former Vandy coach Derek Mason who went 27-55 as the Commodores head coach.
Buffalo's Lance Leipold was also reportedly under consideration for the position.
