The 30-year-old former All-Star should have plenty of interest on the buyout market.
Signed to a $2.3 million minimum deal, Cousins averaged 9.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 25 games with the Rockets.
According to ESPN, Cousins wanted more playing time after being in a reserve role behind rising star Christian Wood.
