Robert Covington is an American basketball player who currently plays for the Houston Rockets. He was born December 14, 1990, in Bellwood, Illinois, west of Chicago and grew up in the Chicago suburbs.
Covington played four years of college basketball at Tennessee State before pursuing a pro basketball career. While initially signed by the Houston Rockets as an undrafted free agent, Covington had to prove himself in the G League before getting a serious chance in the NBA. While a good athlete with an impressive wingspan and good shooting touch, Covington’s thin frame and lack of physical strength made teams skeptical of his chances of contributing in the NBA.
Eventually, Covington got his chance with the Philadelphia 76ers, playing more than four seasons in the City of Brotherly Love and becoming a starter for the 76ers. Early in the 2018-19 season, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, an injury and a subsequent setback cut his season short. In February 2020, Covington was traded again as part of a four-team deal that sent him back to the Houston Rockets, where he continued to be a starter for one of the best teams in the Western Conference.

Robert Covington attended Proviso West High School in Hillside, Illinois, which is west of Chicago. During his freshman year, he grew from 5-9 to 6-3’, which drew the attention of his high school coaches. By his senior season, Covington had grown to 6-8 and averaged 18.1 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks per game.
He was named West Suburban Conference Player of the Year and led his team to the West Suburban championship.
Coming out of high school, Covington’s ultimately chose to play at Tennessee State. While he was thin compared to the other big men at Tennessee State, Covington was the team’s second-leading scorer as a freshman with 11.5 points per game. As a sophomore, he was named Second-Team All-Ohio Valley after averaging 13.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
During his junior season, Covington continued to improve, averaging 17.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, being named First-Team All-OVC. However, Covington missed 10 games due to injury during his senior season. His numbers dropped slightly to 17 points and eight rebounds per game, earning Second-Team All-OVC honors.
After going undrafted, Covington signed a multi-year deal with the Houston Rockets. However, he spent most of the season in the G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In between six call-ups to Houston and seven appearances with the Rockets, Covington excelled in the G League, being named an all-star and the league’s Rookie of the Year. Despite his success in the G League, Covington was waived by the Rockets in October 2014.
Soon after being released by the Rockets, Covington agreed to a four-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers were entering a massive rebuilding process, which enabled Covington to receive plenty of playing time and eventually become a regular starter. Injuries cost Covington time during both the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, but when healthy, he made an impact as a reliable outside shooter and solid defender.
As the 76ers started to show improvement, Covington appeared to solidify his future in Philadelphia by signing a four-year, $62 million extension with the 76ers in November 2017. He followed that up with one of his best seasons, averaging 12.6 points per game and being named to the All-Defensive First Team. However, in November 2018, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the deal that sent Jimmy Butler to the 76ers. Covington averaged 14.5 points and 2.3 steals per game over 22 games with the Timberwolves before being sidelined with a knee injury. After an injury setback, Covington underwent season-ending surgery on his knee.
Covington began the 2019-20 season with the Timberwolves and continued to be a steady contributor. In February 2020, he was part of a four-team trade that saw him dealt to the Houston Rockets.

Covington was born and raised in the West suburbs of Chicago by his mother Teresa Bryant and step-father Dennis Bryant. While the details of Covington’s personal life are somewhat unclear, he previously had a relationship with Dana Lambert, who has a child with NBA player Jae Crowder.
More recently, Covington has been linked to Instagram model Kaylee Anderson. The couple reportedly have a child together.
