Marcus Smart Biography Details, Age, Net Worth, and Basketball Career

Marcus Osmond Smart was born on March 6, 1994. Smart is currently a professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics in the NBA. Marcus Smart was born in Flower Mound, Texas. Marcus was the youngest of four sons to his parents Camellia and Billy Frank Smart. Two of his older brothers, Todd and Jedd are from his mother’s previous relationship, and he shares the same parents as his brother Michael.

Marcus attended Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. After a successful stint in high school, the McDonald’s All-American took his talents to Oklahoma State in 2012.

Smart played two seasons for the Cowboys before being drafted sixth overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Marcus Smart Basketball Career

High School Career (Edward S. Marcus High School)

Marcus Smart teamed up with his future Oklahoma State teammate, Phillip Forte, at Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower mound, Texas. In his senior year, Marcus averaged 15.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. Not only did he put up solid statistics, but Marcus set a winning tone in high school. He finished his high school resume with a record of 115-6 over three seasons, with two 5A state championships.

Marcus Smart’s impressive performance in high school earned him a spot in the McDonald’s All-American game. Smart was listed as the top-rated shooting guard in his class, and the 10th ranked player in the nation going into college.

College Career (Oklahoma State University)

Marcus Smart immediately impacted the Oklahoma State Cowboys upon his arrival. In his first season there he averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 3 steals per game. His defensive savviness quickly became wide-known. He led the Big 12 in steals as a freshman, snatching 99 in the season, a freshman Big 12 record.

Marcus Smart considered leaving school for the NBA after his freshman season, but ultimately decided to return. He returned in a big way, dropping 39 points in a win over Memphis on November 19, 2013. Later that year, Marcus Smart was in headlines, but this time not for his great play. On February 8, 2014, in a heated game against Texas Tech, Marcus Smart got into an altercation with a fan in the crowd. Smart went into the stands and pushed the fan. He later claimed that the fan yelled a racial slur at him.

Smart and the Cowboys were later eliminated in the 2014 NCAA Tournament by Gonzaga, despite his 23 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals in the game. Following the loss, he chose to declare for the 2014 NBA Draft.

NBA Career

Despite the media bashing Smart for his actions in the Texas Tech game, Marcus was still a projected lottery pick. The Boston Celtics selected Marcus Smart sixth overall in the 2014 NBA Draft on June 27, 2014. Smart’s Celtics career did not start as he hoped, however. During his fifth NBA game, Smart sprained his ankle and was forced to miss the next few weeks. He missed 10 total games due to the injury, and then played a primer game with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League. The best game of his rookie campaign came against the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 18, 2015, where he poured in 25 points. Smart’s rookie season was enough to earn him a spot on the NBA All-rookie Second Team.

Marcus Smart’s second year, 2015-16, was full of ups and downs. He had many small injuries that caused him to miss small chunks of the season. However, he did record a triple-double with 10 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds on January 15, 2016. His impressive night over the Phoenix Suns etched him as the first Boston Celtics player to triple-double off the bench since Art Williams. Smart also added two other season-high 26 point nights in 2015-16.

The story of Marcus Smart’s third season will be remembered by the 2016-17 NBA Playoffs. Smart got the starting nod over the injured Isaiah Thomas. Smart exploded for seven three-pointers and 27 total points to help propel the Celtics past the Cleveland Cavaliers. The next year, Smart continued to miss sporadic timeframes with injuries. He missed the majority of the Celtics 2017-18 playoff run with a torn ligament in his thumb. After fighting back from injury once again in 2018-19, the Boston Celtics re-signed Smart to a 4-year, $52 million contract. After an amazing defensive season, Smart once again missed regular season and playoff time with an injury. The left oblique tear caused Smart to miss the entire first round of the playoffs. Despite this, he was still named to the NBA All-defensive First Team.

The 2019-20 campaign has been another rollercoaster year for Marcus Smart. Early in the season, on January 19, 2020, Marcus tallied a career-high 37 points against the Phoenix Suns. It seems like Smart can not avoid negativity in his career, as even when the season is suspended, his name is in headlines.

Marcus Smart was announced as one of the NBA players to test positive for Covid-19, the novel coronavirus that caused the season to be paused.

Marcus Smart Personal Life

Growing up in Flower Mound, Texas, Marcus Smart faced some rough surroundings. He was constantly faced with street life, and around gangsters trying to pull him down the wrong path. Smart fought out of this life with the help of his close-knit family.

He can thank his parents Camellia and Billy Frank Smart for their guidance. He also had two of his older brothers, Todd and Jedd, who are from his mother’s previous relationship, and his brother Michael Smart.

His brother, Todd, passed away from cancer. In 2018, Marcus lost his mother to myelodysplastic syndrome. Marcus Smart still is very open about the pain losing his mother has and continues to cause him.
