Luka Doncic is a Slovenian NBA player who currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks. He was born February 28, 1999, in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. As the son of a former player and coach, Doncic has basketball in his blood. He became a pro basketball player at the age of 16 when he began playing for Real Madrid in Liga ACB and the EuroLeague. At the time of his debut with Real Madrid in April 2015, Doncic was the third-youngest player in Liga ACB history.
After making a name for himself in Europe, helping Real Madrid to three Liga ACB championships and the 2018 EuroLeague championship, Doncic was the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. The Atlanta Hawks selected him, only to quickly trade him to the Mavericks for Trae Young.
Doncic was an instant success in the NBA. In January of his rookie season, Doncic became the second-youngest NBA player to record a triple-double. He finished the season with eight triple-doubles with only three players recording more. Doncic ultimately took home Rookie of the Year honors in 2019 after becoming just the fifth rookie in NBA history to average at least 20 points, five assists, and five rebounds. He followed that up by becoming an all-star in 2020 in his second season in the league. Doncic started the 2020 NBA All-Star Game less than two weeks before his 21st birthday.

At age eight, Doncic began playing basketball against kids his own age at KK Olimpija, a club in Slovenia where his father was a player. However, after 16 minutes, coaches moved him to the under-11 level. Soon after that, Doncic practiced with Olimpija’s under-14 team, although league rules prohibited him from playing in their games, forcing him to play with the club’s under-12 team.
In February 2012, Doncic was loaned to Spanish club Real Madrid for an under-14 tournament. He won tournament MVP despite his team finishing second. Later that year, Doncic signed a five-year contract with Real Madrid, and despite being 13 at the time, immediately began to star on the club’s under-16 team.
He was moved up to the under-18 and Real Madrid reserve team for the 2014-15 season, helping the Real Madrid reserves win a championship in the fourth division of Spanish basketball.
In April 2015, Doncic made his debut as a professional with Real Madrid’s first-team in Liga ACB at the age of 16. Despite playing in just five games that season, he became the third-youngest player in league history. Doncic slowly carved out more of a role on the Real Madrid team over the next two seasons. During the 2016-17 season, he started 11 of 42 games while averaging 11.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Doncic blossomed into one of the brightest stars in Europe. He guided Real Madrid to the EuroLeague championship while being named EuroLeague MVP and EuroLeague Final Four MVP. He averaged 16 points per game and had a league-high 21.5 Performance Index Rating.

NBA Career After proving himself to be one of the best players in Europe, the Atlanta Hawks took Doncic with the third pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. However, the Dallas Mavericks, who were hoping Doncic would fall to them at the fifth overall pick, worked out a trade with the Hawks, sending Atlanta Trae Young. In the second game of the regular season, Doncic scored 26 points, becoming the youngest 20-point scorer in franchise history. In the seventh game of the season, Doncic eclipsed 30 points for the first time in his career.
In January, Doncic became the second-youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double. Later that month, he became the first NBA player to record multiple triple-doubles and have a 30-point triple-double while still a teenager. He would finish his rookie season averaging 21.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and six assists per game. Doncic was a unanimous selection on the NBA All-Rookie Team and won Rookie of the Year honors.
Doncic picked up where he left off in his second NBA season, showing no signs of a sophomore slump. In November, he became the youngest NBA player to record consecutive 35-point triple-doubles. Prior to his 21st birthday, Doncic was named a starter on the Western Conference All-Star Team.
On March 4, Doncic recorded the 22nd triple-double of his career, passing Jason Kidd for the most in Mavericks history.
At the time that the 2019-20 NBA season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Doncic was averaging 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game.
