Josh Richardson Biography Details, Age, Net Worth, & Basketball Career

Josh Richardson is an American pro basketball player who currently plays guard for the Philadelphia 76ers. He was born on September 15, 1993, in Edmond, Oklahoma. He grew up in Oklahoma, where he was one of the best high school players in the state. Richardson played four years of college basketball at the University of Tennessee, becoming one of the league’s best defensive players and an All-SEC caliber star for the Volunteers.

The Miami Heat selected Richardson with the 40th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. As a rookie, his playing time was sparse. However, it slowly increased as the season went along with Richardson winning Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors in March. Despite a knee injury that kept him sidelined for the early part of the 2016-17 season, Richardson started to carve out a bigger role on the Heat. Ahead of the 2017-18 season, Richardson signed a four-year, $42 million extension with the Heat. He started 81 games that season and all 73 games he played the following season.

In July 2019, Richardson was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Heat.

Josh Richardson Basketball Career

High School Career (Santa Fe High School)

Josh Richardson was a standout player at Santa Fe High School in his hometown of Edmond, Oklahoma. As a senior, he averaged 16.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. He was named to the Super 5 First Team of The Oklahoman, the state’s largest newspaper. Richardson was also named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association "Large West" All-State Team. However, he was largely overlooked by recruiting services, receiving only two or three stars.

College Career (Tennessee Volunteers)

After high school, Richardson played college basketball at Tennessee under head coach Cuonzo Martin. As a freshman, he started just nine of his team’s 34 games, averaging 2.9 points per game. As a sophomore, Richardson started all 33 games but averaged just 7.9 points per game. The Volunteers played in the NIT both seasons.

Richardson took his game to another level as a junior, scoring 10.3 points per game and making 34% of his three-point attempts. He also earned SEC All-Defensive Team honors while helping the Volunteers reach the Sweet 16. During his senior season under head coach Donnie Tyndall, Richardson scored 16 points per game and was an All-SEC First Team selection despite Tennessee finishing 16-16.

NBA Career

The Miami Heat selected Richardson 40th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft. He earned a contract after playing for the Heat during the summer league. However, he started just two of the 52 games he played in, averaging 6.6 points per game. Richardson missed the early part of his second pro season after suffering a knee injury during summer league. But he recovered in time to play 53 games, averaging 10.2 points per game.

Richardson did enough in his first two seasons to earn a four-year, $42 million extension from the Heat during the summer of 2017. He became a full-time starter for the Heat the following season, averaging 12.9 points per game and shooting 38% from the perimeter. He improved even more in 2018-19, scoring 16.6 points per game despite missing the end of the season due to injury.

In July 2019, Richardson was part of the four-team, sign-and-trade arrangement that sent Jimmy Butler to the Heat and Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers. Before the 2019-20 NBA season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Richardson was averaging 13.8 points per game as Philadelphia’s starting shooting guard.
