Davis Bertans was born on November 12, 1992 in Rujiena, Latvia. He was born to Dina and Dainis Bertans alongside his brother Dairis Bertans. His father, Dainis, was a professional basketball player. His brother, Dairis, was also a professional basketball player, as he once played for the New Orleans Pelicans. Basketball clearly runs through the Bertans bloodline.

The 6-10 Latvian played for numerous professional teams prior to coming to the NBA. He played for Kadeti II, BAA Riga, ASK Riga, Keizarmezs, Barons/LMT, Olimpija Ljubljana, KK Partizan, and Saski Baskonia before coming to the NBA. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the 42nd overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, but his rights were immediately traded to the San Antonio Spurs. It wasn’t until 2016 when Bertans joined the Spurs. Throughout his rookie campaign, Bertans spent multiple stints with their G League affiliate, Austin Spurs. After three years of playing time with the Spurs, Bertans was traded to the Washington Wizards. Davis Bertans is currently a member of the Washington Wizards.

International Career (Kadeti II, BAA Riga, ASK Riga, Keizarmezs, Barons/LMT, Olimpija Ljubljana, KK Partizan, Saski Baskonia)

Having taken the overseas route to the NBA, Davis Bertans began a professional career from a young age. He played on many professional teams prior to coming to the NBA, unlike the traditional high school to college route in America. Bertans began his career in 2007 playing for ASK Kadeti II. From 2008-2010 he played for BAA Riga in Latvia’s second division. He also shared time with ASK Riga in the top division in 2008-2009. In 2009-10 he played for BK Keizarmezs. The following year he played for the BK Barons. He was then signed to a multi-year deal with Union Olimpija, a Slovenian Club, in November 2010.

After the 2010-11 season with Union Olimpija, the Indiana Pacers drafted Bertans with the 42nd overall pick in the 2011 Draft, but traded his rights to the San Antonio Spurs alongside 15th overall pick Kawhi Leonard, in exchange for George Hill. However, Bertans remained overseas for an extended period of time before coming to the NBA. In January 2012, he signed with Partizan Belgrade, a Serbian Club. He then tore his ACL, causing him to miss an extended period of time. After his return, Bertans terminated his contract at the end of the season. He then went on to sign a deal with Laboral Kutxa Baskonia. He once again tore his ACL while playing with the Spanish club. In 2016, they agreed on a buyout.

NBA Career

After a long trip between many different professional clubs, Bertans finally signed with the San Antonio Spurs on July 14, 2016. In his NBA debut, he scored five points against the Golden State Warriors on October 25, 2016. On January 7, 2017, Bertans poured in 21 points against the Charlotte Hornets. He was quickly proving that he had a knack for shooting the three-ball at his size. He did spend some time with the Austin Spurs, the San Antonio Spurs G League affiliate, throughout his tenure with the Spurs. On January 8, 2018, Bertans recorded 28 points against the Sacramento Kings. After the season, the Spurs re-signed Bertans to a two-year deal on July 11, 2018. 

Bertans was then traded to the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal centered around DeMarre Carroll on July 6, 2019. In his Washington Wizards debut, Bertans scored 23 points. Bertans continued to show promise and growth over his career in the NBA.
