Rivers released a statement on Twitter, confirming the news and thanking the Clippers organization and its fans:

It's a bold move for the Clippers after a disappointing end to a season, blowing a 3-1 lead to the Denver Nuggets in the playoffs — one of the worst collapses in NBA postseason history.
With two years left on his contract, Rivers leaves the Clippers after seven years in Los Angeles, going 356-208 in the regular season, but just 27-32 in the playoffs.
Stunned by this news. Did not see this coming based on what had already been reported and what I had heard from multiple people. Think the Clippers job becomes the No. 1 coaching availability on the market now.

ESPN reports that the top candidates to replace Rivers are Ty Lue and Jeff Van Gundy.
Rivers might not be out of a job for long, though. The Undefeated reports that the Philadelphia 76ers have already reached out to Rivers about their coaching vacancy.
